Act Changes In April 2025 – For everyone else, this change will happen in september 2025. Here's everything you need to know: Beginning april 2025, there will be more time per question. The composite score for anyone taking the test in either the paper or computer format prior to april 2025, or the paper format through july 2025, will show as the average of the english, math, reading, and science scores.
Beginning with the september 2025 test, all students testing on a saturday, either online or on paper, will experience these benefits. Some school districts have students take the act in both the spring and fall, and act did not want to change the testing. Super scoring means that act takes the highest section scores from multiple test attempts to create a new composite score. Starting in september 2025, the act changes will apply to both online and paper/pencil versions of the test.

The act will introduce a shorter, digital test at select locations starting april 5th, 2025. By september 2025, both online and paper test takers will be able to opt out. But before we get into what is changing, we want to get into when the change is happening, because we've heard a lot of confusion and misinformation going around.
As act announced in july 2024, the science section will be optional starting with the digital format in april 2025. It can’t be taken at home. You may have heard the act is changing in 2025, and registration is now open for the april, june, and july test dates (as of december 5).
Janet godwin, ceo of act, recently announced changes to the act test. Starting in april 2025, students who choose to test online will have more flexibility and choice, experience a shorter test, and get more time to respond to each question. Students will also have the option to take the act online or on paper, but online testing must be done at an official act test center.
Online test takers (april, june, and july 2025) can choose to skip it. Overall, the number of questions is being reduced from 215 to 171.
